Beach House/ Bloom

there is something special about music that has the ability to create the illusion of everlasting happiness in 4 mins and 14 seconds.

so Beach House has been around for some time, since 2004 from baltimore, maryland. releasing their first album in 2006, Bloom is now their fourth album released in may 2012. Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally are the two masterminds behind the group however this album was produced and engineered by Chris Coady who also worked with Grizzly Bear and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. it definitely hasn’t lost any the of the soul of the group

with themes of fleeting existence, transparent beauty and humanities endless search for love. its hard not to get pulled in to their lyrics such as “if you built yourself a myth you’d know just what just to give. what comes after this momentary bliss? the consequence of what you do to me. help me to name it”

as Doubtfulsounds from fasterlouder.com.au says:
“Beach House’s x-factor is still without a doubt the dreamy, heady drone that makes up the DNA of their sound. Even when they pare things back on songs like the lightly skipping On the Sea they still manage to capture that feel, primarily through Legrand’s vocal style that sticks firmly to the game plan. Her swoon and mantra-like use of melody serves the same purpose as the billowing effect laden guitars and swirling keyboard sounds. It is what Beach House do and do so well.”

yeah, i get it doesn’t make you wanna get up on the podium with your best friend, bumping and grinding, dancing, taking your shirt off and throwing it around your head, grabbing the nearest guy by the neck, planting a sloppy pash on his face and yelling “farrrrrrk, yeahhh” (clearly moments from my youth are slightly less respectable)

it does however stir something below, that dropping feeling, in that instant you realise you have fallen in love.

fridays song for the weekend

cherry lips/ loon lake

Funkommunity/ Chequered Thoughts

my friend put me on to the funkommunity where new zealand’s poly neo soul never sounded so good. i keep trying to write a review but their sound, it just sinks in to my soul and i get lost in the rhythm.
reading their website it’s just a block of words making it hard to extract the story behind their work (somebody should fix that) but with isaac aesili smooth electro sounds, and rachael fraser’s sassy voice, i just want to pour them in to a bubble bath and lay in to it until my heart is full.

“With their distinctive mixture of future soul instrumentation and sassy vocal performances, ranging from old school jazz to contemporary r&b stylings, Funkommunity have created a soundscape that is just as surprising as it is persistent. Though there clearly is an authentic, analogue feel to the production, Isaac kept sufficient space for his obsession with 80's boogie, humongous basslines and computer beats. The outcome is no less than outstanding – from the rump shaking uptempo grooves of 'Pass It On' and 'Sorceress', to highly emotional synth-gospel jams like 'Dandilion' and 'You Make It That Way'.” – Music.Net.NZ

so excuse me while i take my bath.

Reptar/ Body Faucet

i love the rugrats, chucky was always my favourite. i saw the movie on the big screen. both of them. bought the sound track too. that’s how much i love it. now my new favourite band is reptar –might have a connection to my love of the rugrats. ill let you decide that.
they hail from athens, georgia. home of the mightly georgian bulldogs. football fan too. also might have something to do with why i love them so much.
anyways, they have just released their debut LP Reptar/ Body Faucet May, 2012

so we got andy mcfarland on drums, ryan engelberger on bass and will kennedy on sweet keys (you can just tell he’s the hot one) and graham ulicny on guitar and vocals. (i think last names are important – shows where we come from)
there something bout their psychedelic –indy-african beat-pop-post punk music that is so uplifting yet lacks the pretension that comes from artist that try to push the boundaries of the musical realms.  on their website they talk about their lyrics and music that flows in a liquid form from real places, each song oozing with a different color and substance.
"we wanted to capture the thoughts we project on our surroundings and the ideas that flow in and out of us each day," says graham
and with lyrics like “when i recite your name only the good things remain” how can you not feel happy! i feel i should mention somthing about the depth to their music, an underlying tone of honesty but i really just find it fun.
i hear a bit of klaxons in there, a bit of vamipre weekend and a dash of two door cinema club, and why the name "reptar", well, they say its because it was second most stupid name they have heard of.
the first was “invisible boyfriend”. i tend to agree.

cross-stitched at metro arts

cross-stitch/friday 1st june

i had started to lose hope in the arts. with the current cuts, the mass evacuation to melbourne, brisbane had become a black hole for independent artist. then I discovered this:

it started with letter to a lover. my friends sarah winters asked if everyone could sent her letter to lovers past, present and future. i wrote 4.

you were welcomed by thousands plastered over the allyway to the back of metro arts. i was over whelmed by the amount of hope, hurt, sadness and pain that covered the walls. the bleeding hearts.
the rain was falling as we gathered in the courtyard. deep discussion were had with andrew corey from backbone youth arts. it was all a bit of a blur, something about my father. that man knows too much.
we stopped in to the theatre to have a quite moment with tom quirk, writing a message in a bottle and sharing another. it was intimate and lacked the fear we usually hold when it comes to sharing our hopes.
i spend an hour waiting for vodka and truth or was it truth and vodka. either way it was worth the wait. not because of the free vodka. well not entirely. i wish i could share more about it however i signed a confidentiality agreement. my lips are sealed.
that was near the end of your night, more blurred laughter, whispered secretes, stolen looks, nikki and i danced down the driveway under the collections of bleeding hearts and in to the darkness.
i hope to find that place again. were freedom is king and chaos rules, lies are shared and the truth is simply accepted not judged.

all that shines too bright
